Why Shadowbane didn't make billions

Thursday, January 31, 2008
I am a little tired of people referring to Shadowbane's lack of commercial success, and using it as an argument for why games with a heavy focus on PvP won't work, so I am gonna make a brief statement:

STFU!

Shadowbane was a great concept and a great game, and the only reason it wasn't a massive success, was buggy and outdated technology.

If Shadowbane had released without all the client crashes, with a better server solution and with a graphical engine that could compete with other games released at the time, it would have been a HUGE hit.

And on that note - they are wiping all the Shadowbane servers and all the characters, and re-releasing two new servers in the very near future. It's free, and I am gonna go play it with some friends, to hopefully re-experience some of that magic a fresh Shadowbane server brings - for probably the last time.

Let the ganking and smack talking commence!
Comments:
I agree with you that the concept of shadowbane is excellent; however, the game play and technical features are terrible.

hope you find what youre looking for, i'll remain patiently waiting for the next big thing in gaming ;) so dont spend too much time killing large ants for 8gp

well, whatever you do, just make sure you don't spend TOO much time playing leaving Darkfall tasks behind....:P

I've been thinking about giving Shadowbane another go round myself. :) I'm just waiting on work about when all this is gonna happen. Last time i checked they were patching test w/ the patch they plan on using when they wipe.

While making games is my job, playing games is my hobby. Since I am living in a foreign country with pretty much no life outside my job, I spend a lot of my free time playing online games.

Damn, that sounded a little sad.

Amen Claus.

Refreshing to read those comments on SB coming from another developer.

I love everything from the intellectual property, to character customization and the level of player interaction (PvP and politics) the SB platform paved way for. Personally I think it was damn near perfect.

The potentially huge commercial success was simply wasted by the all so apparant shortcomings you very well summarized.

Cheers to this one last hoorah and a game that will go down as one of the 'true spirit' classics in pvp history.

Claus, Athens is a place to go out not stay in. Gimme a call and I'll take you to the best places in town...provided i get a DF demo :P

on a serious note, yeah, i am my computer's best friend from time to time; summer is better though...

Hi. What do you think of the Perma-Death feature placed in a open world pvp game?

Wow, some people really think bugs and lag killed the game... amazing. Shadowbane could have made billions... that is classic. Where are you going to find millions of people with no job or life to play your game? You do realize shadowbane is not to be 'just' played but to crush your enemies.. they are not coming back, you know they are not going to be playing the game anymore.

I agree, I really liked SB, but the server performance back at the beginning was poor, and I didn't care for some of the game mechanics regarding protection of structures in player cities. Went back to DAOC after I left, but they almost had me long term. (I was there for 4 months).

I never felt the graphics were that outdated, and to me gameplay is more important than graphics.

I was sort of surprised to hear you slam it for that though, as many folks are concerned that DF will suffer from the same problem, outdated graphic technology. (which I promptly dismiss)

Agree too 100%!

Shadowbane was so awesome at it's peak, when people actually played it. You really have to GIVE IT A CHANCE to enjoy, imo, one of the best games through MMO history.

You misspelled "smaktakling."

CLaus, it would have never been a success.

It lacks overall content A LOT. Only people that pvp all the time non-stop love the game, even for me it got damn boring and that had nothing to do with sb.exe or bad graphs.

It focuses too hard on gvg so it kicks a big part of the playerbase in the nuts. You didn't have much at hands when you were on alone.

IF sb had the perfect start it would have still only be a viable game for nation vs nation sieging non stop. Most People get bored of that and sb lacks side content to diverse the gameplay so people just quit.

Sb was a failure from design.

The bad start only made people make up their minds faster.

Don't list to Gunther, he's crazy.

I loved SB in beta, but with the siege changes for release and the server issues I got tired fast.

Anyways, what alias do you use for gaming? Not like we'd all PK you or anything...

devacore,

You are out of your mind. While sb might not have been poised to make "billions", it could have done a HELL of a lot better. Everybody I know that played sb quit because of bugs and lag. I dont know one person that quit cause they actually didnt like it. That being said there were definitely design flaws within sb, but the pvp and city building aspects had the potential to compensate and even dwarf those flaws.

The word "billions" is an obvious exaggeration, used to make the title more interesting. I picked it because it sounds better than "millions" :)

Of course it could have done a lot better, Sack.

I liked SB but it got bored fast.

I started in US beta, and by now i started and quit sb 6 times :p

Sack, i didn't quit because of bugs and lag, the longest time i played sb i quit because my guild turned inactive because we got carpet baned non stop and defensive sieges were becoming a repetitive drag against an enemy that outnumbered us every single time.

It felt like we only logged on to defend our town, simply cause there was not much else to do.

That's what i loved about uo and probably df, it has content besides sieging.

Gunther,

I suppose that I should qualify my comments a bit. I played about a year of beta (fun stuff...legendary stuff). When launch hit day one was a sign in nightmare. When I was able to get in lag was horrendous, worsened by the fact that I was playing on a dial up line (I had recently moved and previously was playing beta on dsl). I played for 1-2 months into release where we were the second group to get our ToL up... 12 hours behind Ebonlore, who was the first. Regardless of bugs and lag I was still into it as our group was working miracles. We had 30 people running up against 300 (EL) and we were holding our own. In fact EL was forced to work over the guys on Ice Island and others in out of the way areas because they met with such resistance from us (we were the only other group able to establish on the main continent. With out support we allowed others to build up around us, just to get stabbed in the back :D). At any rate, I digress... the point is that our small group worked hard to accomplish a lot only to have out city raped due to bugs (ie walls NOT forming, and buggy guards). While EL and others might have had similar issues (by most accounts they did not) the fact remains that we were outnumbered, so protecting our vulnerable city was rough. Eventually there was nothing we could do. Combine that with the exe errors and you get why I quit.

Later when I watched my friends and guild members drop off the main reason that I saw for most of them was that bugs were causing inflation, untenable situations, and exe drops. Since then I've considered relogging... and did at one point only to find that there was still lag in newb zones (this is like 2 yrs ago) and almost every open space was built on.

Long story short... I understand your point. The gist of mine is simply that sb would have made much more money up front were it not for lag, exe drops, and other prevalent bugs (this is really in reply to devacore...again. And Claus, even though I quoted your "billions", I knew what you meant... I'm sure most did except dcore :D). In fact their success could have yielded enough revenue allowing them to create more compelling content, etc.
